UL 325 is a safety standard for door, drapery, gate, louver, and window operators and systems. For gates, it governs the operator: how it is built, how it senses that something is in the way, what happens when it does, and how the external safety devices connected to it are supervised. Manufacturers design and list their operators to it. It is a product standard.
ASTM F2200 is the standard specification for automated vehicular gate construction. It governs the gate itself: how it is built, guarded, supported, and prevented from falling, being pushed out of its track, or creating hazards for people near it. It is a construction standard, and it applies to the gate whether the operator is new or thirty years old.
Neither is a law in itself. Their weight comes from adoption and reference. Manufacturers require compliance as a condition of proper installation. Insurers and courts treat them as the recognized standard of care. Building and fire officials reference them. And practically, they represent what the industry has agreed is safe after decades of incidents.
The interaction is what people miss. An operator listed to the current UL 325 revision will refuse to run, or will run in a degraded mode, if its monitored safety devices are missing or faulty. That is by design. But the same operator will happily drive a gate that has exposed rollers, unguarded pinch points, or no way to stop it leaving its track, because those are ASTM F2200 problems that the operator cannot detect. Both have to be addressed.
Entrapment Protection: Primary, Secondary and What the Types Mean
Entrapment protection is the core concept in UL 325, and the structure is simpler than the terminology suggests. A gate operator needs two independent means of protecting against entrapment in each direction of travel: a primary means and a secondary means.
The types are lettered. Type A is inherent entrapment sensing built into the operator, which detects that the gate has met resistance and reverses. Type B1 is a photoelectric sensor, the photo eye beam across the opening. Type B2 is an edge sensor, a contact strip mounted where the gate could trap something. Type C is an inherent force limiting design. Type D is constant pressure control, where the gate only moves while someone holds a button and can see the gate. Type E is an audible alarm.
The requirement is that primary and secondary protection come from different types, so that a single failure mode does not disable both. An operator with inherent sensing as its primary protection needs an external device, a photo eye or an edge, as its secondary. Relying on inherent sensing alone means one mechanism protects everything, and inherent sensing only reacts after contact has already been made.
That last point is what owners find most surprising. Inherent sensing works by noticing the gate is being resisted. Something has to push back before the gate knows. For a vehicle that means minor contact. For a person, and particularly a child, the force required to trigger reversal on a heavy gate can be more than the situation tolerates. That is precisely why non contact protection exists as a companion requirement rather than an upgrade.
Direction matters as well. Protection is required for both opening and closing travel. Owners tend to think about gates closing on a car, but a swing gate opening toward a pedestrian area, or a slide gate opening into the space behind a fence line, creates its own entrapment zones that need covering.

Monitored Devices and Why the 2016 Change Mattered
The most consequential change in recent UL 325 revisions is device monitoring, and it separates older installations from current ones more than any other single requirement.
Monitoring means the operator continuously supervises its external safety devices and knows whether they are present and functional. If a photo eye is disconnected, its wiring is cut, or it fails, a monitored system detects the loss and responds. Depending on the operator, that response may be refusing to run automatically, reverting to constant pressure operation only, or stopping altogether until the fault is cleared.
Before monitoring was required, a photo eye could fail silently. The gate kept operating normally with no protection whatsoever, and nobody knew until an incident. That failure mode is the reason monitoring exists, and it is exactly what we still find on older systems in the field: a photo eye that has been dead for years on a gate that has been cycling happily the whole time.
The practical consequence for owners is that monitored devices and non monitored devices are not interchangeable. A monitored operator requires devices designed to be monitored and wired to the correct terminals. Installing an inexpensive non monitored photo eye on a monitored operator either will not work or will require defeating the supervision, which puts the system back where it started.
This is also why replacing an operator on an older gate frequently costs more than the operator. The new unit will require monitored devices the old system never had, plus the wiring to support them. That is not a contractor padding a quote. It is the standard doing its job, and it is worth understanding before the estimate arrives.
Photo Eyes: Placement, Alignment and Real World Limits
Photo eyes are the most common secondary protection and the most commonly misunderstood. They are a beam between a transmitter and a receiver. When the beam breaks, the operator reacts.
Placement determines whether they actually protect anything. Height matters, because a beam set for a vehicle bumper will pass over a small child or a pet. Position along the travel matters, because a single beam covers a single line and a gate has a travel path with several potential entrapment zones. Many installations need more than one pair, particularly on slide gates where the leading edge, the receding side, and the area behind the open gate are all distinct hazards.
Alignment is the maintenance issue. Photo eyes are mounted on posts, and posts move. Frost heave, settling soil, a landscaper’s mower, a delivery truck, or a winter storm will knock a pair out of alignment, and once the beam misses, the gate either stops working or, on an unmonitored system, quietly stops being protected.
Environmental limits are real in Northwest Washington. Dense fog can attenuate a beam. Heavy rain and road spray coat lenses. Low winter sun striking a receiver directly can cause false readings for a specific hour of the day, which owners describe as random until someone notices the pattern. Snow accumulation blocks beams outright. None of these are reasons to remove the devices. They are reasons to place them thoughtfully and clean them.
What photo eyes do not do is cover crush points along the gate’s path. A beam across an opening tells you something is in the opening. It says nothing about a hand near a hinge, a body between a slide gate and a fence, or the gap that opens and closes as a leaf swings past a post. Those are edge sensor territory.

Edge Sensors: Contact Protection Where It Is Needed
Edge sensors are contact devices, usually a rubber or vinyl strip containing a switch or a pressure sensitive element, mounted along a gate surface that could trap someone. Contact compresses the strip and the operator reacts.
Where they belong depends on the gate. On a slide gate, the leading edge is obvious, but the trailing edge matters too, because a gate opening into a pocket or along a fence creates a shear hazard on the receding side. On a swing gate, the leading edge of the leaf is the primary location, with additional protection at the hinge side where the closing arc creates a pinch point.
The advantage over photo eyes is coverage. An edge protects along its entire length rather than at a single beam line, and it responds to contact regardless of the height or size of what it touches. The disadvantage is that it only responds after contact, which is why edges and photo eyes complement rather than substitute for one another.
Edge sensors live hard lives. They are mounted where they get struck, and vehicles, gravel, snow removal, and ultraviolet exposure all degrade them. A damaged edge frequently reads as permanently triggered, which prevents the gate from closing at all. Owners sometimes interpret that as the edge being the problem and ask for it to be bypassed, which trades a nuisance for a hazard.
Wired and wireless versions each have tradeoffs. Wired edges on moving gates require a way to carry the signal without the cable failing from flexing, which is a real installation detail rather than an afterthought. Wireless edges avoid that but add batteries and a transmitter to the maintenance list.
Gate Construction Under ASTM F2200
The construction standard is where existing gates in Northwest Washington most often fall short, because it addresses how the gate was built rather than what electronics were added to it. A gate fabricated before the current expectations, or fabricated by someone unfamiliar with them, can be structurally sound and still be non compliant.
Several requirements come up repeatedly in the field. Gates must be designed so they cannot fall over if a support fails. Slide gates need positive stops so they cannot travel past their intended limits and leave the track or the guide. Rollers on the gate frame need guarding so hands cannot reach them. Openings in the gate near the operating area need to be sized so a person cannot reach through into a hazardous zone. Exposed pinch points and shear points that a person could reach need to be guarded or eliminated.
The reach through requirement catches a lot of ornamental gates. A decorative pattern with generous openings looks fine standing still and becomes a hazard when the gate is moving past a fixed post, because a hand that fits through the pattern can end up in the closing gap. This is why gates designed for automation often screen the portion of the panel nearest the operating area even when the rest of the pattern stays open.
Positive stops on slide gates are the requirement most often missing outright. A cantilever gate that runs past its intended travel can come off its rollers, and a rolling gate can leave its track. Both are severe failures because a gate that leaves its support becomes a falling object.
The standard also addresses where gates may operate relative to pedestrian areas, which is why a vehicle gate is not a substitute for a pedestrian gate. Mixing foot traffic through a vehicle gate opening is a design decision that the standard specifically discourages, and on properties with regular pedestrian use a separate pedestrian gate is the correct answer rather than an optional extra.

Gate Classes: Which One Applies to Your Property
ASTM F2200 sorts gates into four usage classes, and the class affects what is expected of the installation. The classes describe who uses the gate rather than how big it is.

Warning Signage, Controls and Manual Operation
Three smaller requirements get overlooked constantly and are among the cheapest to satisfy.
Warning placards belong on both sides of the gate, visible to anyone approaching. They exist because the people most at risk around an automatic gate are the ones least familiar with it, and a sign is the only communication available to a visitor or a child. Operators ship with them. They frequently end up in a drawer during installation.
Control placement matters more than it appears. A control that operates the gate should be positioned so the person using it can see the gate move, and far enough from the gate that the operator is not reaching through or standing in the travel path. Open and close buttons placed for convenience rather than sightline defeat the purpose of having a person in the loop.
Manual release must be present, accessible, and functional. A release that exists on paper but sits under landscaping, has a lost key, or has seized from corrosion is not a release. We test it on every service visit because it is the thing that matters most on the day the power fails, and it is the thing most likely to have been neglected since installation.
Constant pressure controls sit alongside these. Where a gate is operated by someone watching it, a hold to run control is itself a recognized form of protection, which is why it appears in the type list. How Automatic Gate Safety Standards Fail in the Real World
After enough service calls, the pattern of findings becomes predictable. These are the conditions we encounter most often on existing gates in Skagit, Whatcom, and Snohomish counties.
Missing secondary protection entirely. The gate relies on the operator’s inherent sensing and has no photo eye or edge at all. Common on installations more than a decade old and on gates automated by someone unfamiliar with the requirement.
Photo eyes present but non functional. Disconnected during a repair and never reconnected, knocked out of alignment and never corrected, or failed and never noticed because the system does not monitor them.
Safety devices deliberately bypassed. Someone found the gate nuisance tripping, and rather than fixing the cause, jumpered the input. This is the finding we take most seriously, because it converts an annoyance into a hazard and it is usually undocumented.
No positive stops on a slide gate. Nothing prevents the gate from running past its intended travel. On a cantilever gate this is a serious condition.
Unguarded rollers and unscreened panels near the operating zone. Common on ornamental gates that were built for looks and automated later.
Pedestrians routinely using the vehicle gate because no pedestrian gate was provided. Extremely common on multi family properties.
Missing or removed warning signage, and a manual release that nobody on the property knows how to use.
None of these findings mean a gate has to be replaced. Most are correctable. What they do mean is that the system is not currently doing what its owner believes it is doing, which is the thing worth knowing.

Bringing an existing installation up to current Automatic Gate Safety Standards is a defined piece of work rather than an open ended project, and it usually follows the same sequence.

Electrical work on a gate is inspected, and the requirements and process are published by Washington L&I. That inspection covers the electrical installation rather than a full entrapment protection audit. Building and fire officials may review gates as part of a larger permit or an access condition, particularly on commercial and multi family projects. On a private driveway, often nobody looks at all.
The absence of routine inspection does not remove exposure. Where these standards matter most is after an incident, when the question becomes whether the system met the recognized standard of care. Insurers, attorneys, and manufacturers all reference them. High traffic entrances need protection that tolerates constant use without nuisance tripping, which usually means more devices placed more carefully rather than fewer. Vehicle detection interacts with safety here: loops that hold a gate open while a vehicle occupies the opening are doing safety work, and a failed loop that lets a gate close on a truck is a safety failure rather than an inconvenience.
Pedestrian separation is the recurring design problem on multi family properties. Residents will walk through the vehicle gate if there is no reasonable alternative, regardless of signage. Providing a proper pedestrian gate is the fix, and it is far cheaper than the alternative.
Tailgating is a security concern that becomes a safety concern. Anti tailgating measures that close a gate quickly behind a vehicle increase the risk to whatever follows, which is why detection and timing have to be designed together rather than tuned for security alone.
Documentation matters more on managed properties than anywhere else, because the people responsible change. What is installed, when it was evaluated, what was corrected, and who holds administrative access should live in a file rather than in one person’s memory. Photo eyes can be tested by breaking the beam with an object while the gate closes and confirming the gate stops or reverses. Never test with any part of a person. Edge sensors can be tested by applying pressure to the edge with an object and confirming the same response. Inherent sensing can be checked by placing a solid obstruction in the path, again never a person or an animal.
Monitored systems should also be tested for their fault behavior, meaning that disconnecting a device produces the response the operator is supposed to produce rather than being silently ignored. That test belongs to a technician rather than an owner.
A reasonable rhythm for most residential properties in this climate is a check every few months and a professional service visit twice a year, timed before and after winter. Between visits, the signals worth acting on are a gate that has started reversing without an obvious cause, a device with an indicator light behaving differently, physical damage to an edge or a photo eye housing, a post that has visibly shifted, or a gate whose alignment has changed.
