Cantilever gates carry the gate on rollers mounted to a fixed structure beside the opening, with a counterbalance section extending back from the opening. Setback, Stacking and the Road

Wind Load: Why Wider Gets Disproportionately Harder
Width does not increase difficulty in a straight line. It compounds, and wind is the reason.
A gate presents a surface to the wind, and the force on that surface scales with area. A wider gate has more area, and on a swing leaf that force acts through a longer lever arm against the hinges and post. Doubling the width more than doubles the structural demand.

Agricultural properties in the Skagit and Nooksack valleys work to a different standard, and the number that governs is implement width rather than tractor width.
A tractor may be eight feet wide with a sixteen foot implement behind it. Hay equipment, sprayers, and harvest machinery are wider still, and they do not fold for a gate. Livestock trailers need width plus turning room, and a trailer taking a turn cuts inside the tow vehicle’s path.
The practical approach on working land is often two openings rather than one oversized gate. A normal width gate handles daily vehicle traffic and stays quick and manageable. A separate pedestrian gate is the correct answer nearly every time. It is inexpensive relative to the vehicle gate, it removes foot traffic from a moving vehicle gate’s path, and it lets the vehicle gate be sized purely for vehicles. On multi family and commercial sites it moves from good practice to expectation, because residents and visitors will take the shortest path regardless of signage.
Where a pedestrian gate exists, it needs its own access method. A pedestrian who has to trigger the vehicle gate to get in has not been given a separate route in any meaningful sense.
